Professor Leroy Little Bear (Blackfoot Confederacy)
JD

Leroy Little Bear is a member of the Small Robes Band of the Blood Indian Tribe of the Blackfoot Confederacy. He is the Native American Studies professor at The University of Lethbridge. Professor Little Bear has served in a consultant capacity to many Indian Tribes and organizations including the Blood Tribe, Indian Association of Alberta, and the Assembly of First Nations of Canada. Professor Little Bear has also served on many different committees, commissions and boards, including the Task Force on the Criminal Justice and Its Impact on the Indian and Metis Peoples of Alberta (1990-1991).

Professor Little Bear has authored numerous articles, including ‘A concept of Native Title’ which was cited in a Canadian Supreme Court decision, and co-authored a number of books including ‘Pathways to Self-Determination’, ‘Quest For Justice’, and ‘Governments in Conflict’ (with Dr. Menno Boldt & Dr. Anthony Long).

His current research interests include the exploration of North American Indian science and Western physics, and the exploration of Blackfoot knowledge through songs, stories, and the landscape. In 2003 the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation awarded Professor Little Bear the prestigious National Aboriginal Achievement Award for Education.

Erykah Kyle is the mayor of the Palm Island Aboriginal Council in Queensland, Australia. She has been active in social justice movements for her people for many decades. As a leading elder among her people she is an inspiration to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Intimately concerned for her people in one of Australia’s largest Aboriginal communities, she is outspoken against “the government’s stronghold on Aboriginal people”. She is an advocate for self-determination and human rights, and believes in the importance of using Indigenous education processes to build pride in Aboriginality among Palm Island’s children and youth.

Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith

Linda Smith is a Professor of Education at Auckland University. She is also a Joint Director of Nga Pae o te Maramatanga the National Institute for Research Excellence in Māori Development and Advancement . Her book Decolonizing Methodologies: Research and Indigenous Peoples has shaped indigenous research perspectives internationally and raised new questions and challenges for the future.

Her professional background is in Māori and indigenous education. She has been a teacher in primary and secondary schools (1974-1985) and has taught at the University of Auckland since 1989. She has also spent some time as a school counselor and began her career as a researcher in the field of asthma research. Her research interests include young people and their participation in society and the economy, Māori social justice issues, Māori education policy and practice and oral histories. She has a deep interest in indigenous methodologies and ways of knowing.
