There is no fixed qualification for becoming a Member of the NZAC. The primary requirement is that the prospective Member demonstrates an interest in climbing. This is usually shown by developed skills or experience in alpine climbing, rock climbing or
some other aspect of mountaineering.
Membership application forms are available from the Section Secretaries and from the Club Administrator in Wellington. In 1994 the Club membership was approximately 1600 people.
The annual Membership subscription is determined by the Club Committee, and for 1995/6 was $NZ55. Payment of this entitles the Member to receive the Club Publications for that year. Paid at the same time is the Section levy, which in 1995/6 ranged from $NZ3-$NZ15. Life and Honorary Members are not required to pay the annual subscription.
When paying their subscription, Members can make an optional donation to the overseas climbing fund. They can also choose to receive a hardcover Journal by paying an additional fee.
Membership cards are issued annually on receipt of the Member's subscription. They are particularly useful in obtaining hut discounts in NZ and reciprocal rights in Europe and North America.
Couples who are both Members may opt for joint membership. This provides one copy of the Club publications for a subscription that is one and a half the normal subscription.
A Member who has reached an age of 65 or who has been a Member for a period or periods exceeding 35 years is entitled to a veteran subscription, one-half the normal subscription.
A veteran Member's partner can opt for a joint subscription as above, for a total subscription of three-quarters the ordinary subscription.
Youth Members pay a reduced subscription fee which carries all membership rights except receiving the NZAC publications. Publications are available to Youth Members through paying an additional fee.
