THE DARRANS GUIDE

By Murray Judge and Hugh Widdowson, (1990)

The Darran Range has remained free of guidebooks and route descriptions long after the Mount Cook and Mount Aspiring Guides were published. Some would say that this has preserved the mystique of this rugged range, and there are still many places to be explored with hanging valleys, tiny alpine lakes and often a bivvy rock to shelter from the weather. The development of rockclimbing on the walls around Homer Hut and Lake Adelaide created the demand for this guidebook, to record the location and degree of difficulty of routes, and allow the best use of fine weather. The Author has tried to give adequate descriptions of alpine routes without destroying the sense of exploration and adventure which is an essential part of climbing in remote areas. The rock climbing routes are mainly described with topographical diagrams, showing the routes in relation to surrounding features as this has proved to be the most effective way of recording rock routes. The guidebook also covers ranges to the south and to the north of the Darrans. Tramping in this region is covered by Moir's Guide South.
