Club Publications

Publications constitute a major part of the Club's financial expenditures each year. The main publications are the New Zealand Climber and the New Zealand Alpine Journal, which are funded primarily from subscriptions. The Club also publishes guidebooks and occasionally other mountaineering literature on a self-funding basis.

Publications activity is coordinated through the Publications Sub-Committee, which includes the Publications Manager and the Climber and Journal Editor.

Until 1992, the New Zealand Alpine Journal and the New Zealand Climber (then called the Bulletin) were edited by Club Members. However, the significant time required to produce these publications meant that Club-appointed editors would usually edit the publications for 1-2 years at most. In 1992, the Club decided to employ a part-time professional editor to preserve continuity in the Journal and NZ Climber.

The current address for the Editor of the Alpine Journal and the NZ Climber can be found from recent copies of the Climber. Alternatively, send any articles or correspondence to the Headquarters Office, PO Box 3040 Wellington. The Publications Manager can be contacted through the Headquarters Office.

New Zealand Alpine Journal

The New Zealand Alpine Journal is the Club's premier publication. Since the first edition in 1891, it has appeared annually except for the period 1896-1921. The format has varied over the years. Presently it consists of 120-150 pages, with both B/W and colour plates. Content varies from year to year, but typically covers both NZ and overseas mountaineering and rockclimbing as well as scientific and historical subjects. The Journal is also distributed to a number of overseas libraries and Clubs.

The Journal is generally available just before Christmas and a soft cover is supplied automatically to all Club Members who have paid their subscription for the current year. A hard cover is available for an additional subscription charge.

The success and quality of the Journal is determined largely by the articles submitted. Members are encouraged to provide photographs or articles, which may be prose or poetry, serious or humorous, fictional or non-fictional, scientific, historical, personal or factual reports. Where possible, articles should be accompanied by transparencies and /or prints. The Editor reserves the right to accept, abridge or reject articles, depending on the length, quality and interest of the article. Normally any editing is referred to the author as a courtesy before publication.

New Zealand Climber

The New Zealand Climber was launched in 1992 to replace the previous Bulletin with a more colourful format. The Climber, typically 40 pages, is published quarterly in March, June, September and December.

The Climber is primarily intended to provide news and information that is topical and would not be appropriate for the Journal or Section newsletters. The articles include Club news and commentaries, crag guides, expedition reports, book and gear reviews etc. As with the Journal, copy is supplied largely by Members. Normal editorial rights apply as regards accepting, abridging etc.
