Whanganui Bay is undisputedly the North Islands premium rock crag and is located on the western side of Lake Taupo. The crags reside in an area which has a haven of natural bush on one side and the lake, a volcanic caldera, on the other. Access is via a dirt road off Provincial Highway 32. Climbing is on volcanic ignimbrite which provides a plethora of cracks, pockets and face climbs ranging in grade from 13 to 29. It has been rumored that there are over 600 climbs in the immediate area. Whanganui Bay is owned by the Whanganui subtribe of the Tuwharetoa. As access has been a severe issue in the past, Climbers must remember that we are guests of the Whanganui people and that we must respect their wishes. We, as climbers, are extremely lucky to be able to climb here. A draft copy of this guidebook is available for $20 from The Author, Len Gillman at 14 Mountfield Tce, Owairaka, Auckland 3. This guidebook covers Whanganui Bay only, for other central North Island climbing regions see Central North Island Rock.
