Whangapeka - Leslie - Karamea trip

January 1999

This was a 6 day tramping trip in Kahurangi National Park, after we'd met with friends at the Cobb Reunion

Camping by King Hut in the Whangapeka river, occupied by a oldtime miner until the 1970's, now a historic site.
Sidling around Biggs Tops from Whangapeka saddle on the way to the Karamea river.
High point of Biggs Tops, looking down to Karamea.
A bit off route in the Karamea - but the river was low and we didn't have to swim.
Swimming in the Karamea near Thor hut.
The tent city at Venus hut in the Karamea, where we met the Duncan/Parlane/Foubister expedition coming the other way from the Cobb, and about 30 people were in residence.
Swimming in the pool at Venus hut.
A bush robin helps out with dinner at Venus hut.
Watching trout in a Karamea pool (there were about 8 in this pool that we could see).
Trout swimming in the Karamea river (Yes, that image enhanced blur is a Rainbow, maybe 60cm long.
Looking back up the Karamea from Karamea Bend.
