When I'm not being a science geek, or listening to music, or discovering new ales that need consuming I can sometimes be found at the keyboard. I have a sad history of being a closet computer geek. I'm fully in denial (of course) and if ever pressed about the subject am likely to cry (like Michael Jackson). However there are some useful Apps and stuff I've got sitting around that would be of more use if others could use them to. Ask: is a utility (for PC) which will periodically ping a server (you can change which address it uses) so that your ISP thinks you are doing stuff and won't disconnect you - also convinces the PC you are doing something and again you won't be disconnected. note: file is at home, will put up in a couple of weeks On a Mac have a look under properties of the dialin (OS 8.6-9.0) and it can send a 'check if still connected' prompt automatically. Cursors: some cursors for the computer. Rude Grendel will poke its tongue out at you, Crying Jester will bawl its eyes out, and Grendel and Jester will float between the two. And Innuendo Jester will juggle for you (this one is zipped). I also wrote some Win95/98 themes, but haven't got them up anymore as I don't use 95/98 anywhere. VUW Dialup Packs: I've written, or at least updated, the dialup packs for VUW. There are now packs for MacOS up to 9.x.x, and at some point in the future I'll write a MacOS X pack. Win 95a, 95/98.Me, NT4, 2K, and XP is pretty much the same as 2K. The VUW helpdesk has these available for download (www.vuw.ac.nz/its for a start point), otherwise try the Uni bookshop or give me a yell. If you have problems talk to the helpdesk on 463 5050. There are many other apps and small things I've written, particularly for Macs, but also for data analysis on PCs. But in keeping with my filing system, I'm not entirely sure where some of them are. If I do come across them and think the world needs them I'll put them up. cheers, bruce. |
