(this page in cohoots with
Leigh Bullen - Penguin girl!)This information from my caffeine
addicted friend (hey I’m not part of this - honest!) Leigh Bullen did her MSc
on the Little Blue’s on Somes Island. Leigh also provided two of the photo’s
(the two adults in one photo is mine). The
Little Blue Penguins in two of these photos are from Somes Island in the middle
of Wellington (NZ) Harbour. They return each year to the island to breed, which
takes place between July and March. A pair will usually lay 2 eggs and if lucky,
two chicks will fledge. The chicks return to their natal colony (in this case
Somes Is.) when they are about 3 years old to begin the breeding cycle.
Bruce’s Comment: Hey, I couldn’t really have a page I didn’t
comment on! Anyways, rather than the apparently ‘cute’ nature of these
birds, they are infact very grumpy, bad tempered, grouchy animals. They live in
small burrows, where they rear the eggs, and these can get rather smelly. The
major thing you notice on them, is the pevalence of large ticks/mites - again
another attractive (ohhh alliteration) part!
