Groundwater investigations in Kapiti/Horowhenua

Dc resistivity traversing with a Wenner array with minimum electrode spacing of 5 m is being used to investigate the interaction of the Waikanae River with groundwater.10 transects of the river have been measured imaging the shallow electrical structure associated with the river/groundwater interaction.

There is a clear indication that further to the east the river level sits several metres above the groundwater surface, whereas in the lower reaches of the river the groundwater level is very close to the surface. River gauging indicates that this change corresponds to a change from a regime where there is significant loss of water from the river to the groundwater system to one where there appears to be little interaction.
