CSIS - Center for Strategic and International Studies

Not to be confused with Canada's intelligence agency, the Pacific Forum CSIS is a non-profit, public policy research institute. It operates as the Asia-Pacific arm of the Center for Strategic and International Studies of Washington, D.C. The website includes studies, discussions, papers and publications.

CSCAP - Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific

CSCAP's mandate is "to contribute to the efforts towards regional confidence building and enhancing regional security through dialogues, consultation and cooperation. " This official website contains a description "About CSCAP," and offers lists of Member Committees, Working Groups, Publications, Newsletters and Links.

The Canadian Government's ministry site contains a Fact Sheet on DPRK, Travel Information and Advisory Reports. One can search the archives for the Ministry's abstracts and articles.

Worthy of note are the News items from the Pyongyang Times, feature sections such as: "President Kim Jong Il", "Korean Tourism", "Law Archives", "Korean Relations", "DPRK Enterprises", "Economic Information", "Investment in DPRK", "Science and Technology", "Korean Music", "Korean Film", "Korean Export Showroom" and "Online Shopping". A pop-up window provides a contact e-mail for those interested in advertising on the site.

DPRK-North Korea

The DPRK-North Korea website from New Zealand is run by Tim Beal, currently Chairman and Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Research Institute of New Zealand (APRI) , Member of the Editorial Board of the NZ Journal of Asian Studies, Co-editor of Pyongyang Report (available through a link on the site), Secretary of the NZ-DPRK Society, and a co-ordinator of The Asia Forum.

The website presents a chronological collection of articles from various sources and online maps of the Korean Peninsula. The site offers a periodic newsletter, tips on how and where to donate aid, full reports on the relief effort, economic and business development reports, academic papers and commentaries, as well as the full texts of the Joint Declaration of June 15th and the Agreement of April 10th. One can read the South or North version (though some of the links are broken) for interesting wording comparison.

Far Eastern Economic Review

The Far Eastern Economic Review is published weekly in Hong Kong, and wholly owned by Dow Jones & Company, publisher of The Wall Street Journal. The magazine reports on politics, business, economics, technology and social and cultural issues throughout Asia, with a particular emphasis on both Southeast Asia and China. This free website offers a weekly selection of articles from the print magazine. Posted articles remain on the site in a searchable archive. Visitors are also offered a free e-newsletter.

This website, full of pictures and sounds, was reviewed previously by CanKor (see CanKor #15 - 31 October 2000). It is the site of the North Korea business arm of Hyundai Corporation. It describes the origins and rationale of Hyundai-Asan, as well as current plans and activities. News sections focus on articles mostly related to Hyundai-Asan and its projects in North Korea.

One of the most "browse-friendly" free Asian News sites in English. Easy to find news items are grouped by subject and date.

KCNA is the official DPRK Government news agency. This free site contains news articles from various sources in the DPRK, hosted by Korea News Service (KNS) in Tokyo.

Korean Information Service (KOIS)

A thorough and free News website, which provides not only the usual news categories, but also weather, "find errors - win prizes" contests, stock quotations, and exchange rates. The best feature of this site is the description of the workings of the various (South) Korean Government branches and ministries, facts and figures about culture, art, history, visa and travel information, and Immigration information.

Korea Times

The Korea Times claims to be the oldest independent and most influential English-language daily in Korea. It is famed for its prompt News Flash services of foreign and business news, including economy and finance. A free website, the Korea Times includes the usual news sections as well as an "Opinion" section of editorials from South Korean sources.

Korea Herald

The Korea Herald Online has more to offer than simply news articles of interest to Korea enthusiasts. It includes a forum where readers can discuss issues or submit poetry, a section specifically for expatriate residents of Korea, a Language Exchange corner, the Garfield comic strip (with Korean translation) and the Ann Landers column. Past articles are obtainable by searchable Archives.

Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO)

KEDO is an international, non-profit organization established to carry out two key provisions of the Agreed Framework negotiated in 1994 by the US and DPR Korea. The website is divided into the following sections: Reactor Project, Procurement Information, Annual Reports, Press Releases, Nuclear Safety, and Current News.

Korea Petrex Company

The website of Petroleum Resources Exploration Co., Ltd. (Petrex) established in Tokyo on January 4, 1995 as an exclusive overseas agent of General Bureau of Oil Industry, DPR Korea. Petrex has been engaged in various oil exploration programmes in North Korea since 1990. For a fee, one can order publications about these programmes.

A South Korean website that, in addition to News, "Hot Issues" and a Video Collection, includes links to the Ministry of Unification (and a description of ROK's Unification policy), Studies on North Korea, Inter-Korean Summit Talks (including background, outcome, reactions, and related developments). There is also a Discussion Hall where readers can read and post their views/ideas on the DPRK. Also includes documentation on Inter-Korean Exchange and Co-operation.

Korea Watch is a "citizen-based organization", inviting contributions from all readers. Started as an effort to manage news and information related to the security of Korea, it is also a forum for discussion and education on issues affecting Korean security.

A varied website hosted by Korean nationalists, including interviews, news articles and special features related to DPRK. One can download and hear North Korea Music, read a novel based on Korean history, and browse a list of recommended websites.

An amply furnished website hosted by Korean War veterans, there are too many sections and pages to review in full. Examples: a comprehensive update of Korean War KIA-MIA casualties; how to obtain a Korea Serviceman medal; veteran recollections and photos; a "Looking For" section which allows veterans to find their fellow servicemen; memorials; lists of reunions; reference maps; medical issues.

Website contains reports on Relief Activities, and a section (Foreign Relations) on the establishment of diplomatic relations between DPRK and other States. Also contains a section entitled DPRK Leadership, which includes such items as interviews with DPRK officials, Official Statements, the Constitution, Laws and Agreements, and a description of the Juche ideology. The Inter-Korean Relations section is divided into the following subjects: Economy, Military, History & Culture.

ReliefWeb is a project of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The site gives a wealth of information on the world's disaster areas and the work done by international agencies to provide relief to the suffering. The opening page gives the most recent news headlines, with links to more detailed documents. A country-specific list allows readers to specify the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and choose from a plethora of web links under 18 different topics: Country Profile, Culture, Demographics, Development, Disaster history, Economics, Food and Agriculture, Geography and Environment, Government and Politics, Health, History, HIV-AIDS, Human Rights, Infrastructure, Media links, Military and Defence, UN links, and Weather. For a one-stop service of information on the DPRK, ReliefWeb is hard to beat.

Yonhap News World Service

A free online news service, Yonhap supplies headlines with short descriptions of the items from domestic and foreign news. Boasting sources that include 47 foreign news agencies, Yonhap presents reports from AP, AFP, Xinhua, Kyodo, Itar Tass, and DPA. A Weekly Report summarizes North Korean news every Thursday. A Monthly Report goes by the name of Vantage Point. Unfortunately, Yonhap does not retain an archive of its news items.
